Whitby Town
The town of Whitby is found on the dramatic North Yorkshire Coastline. Built around its famous harbour and looked over by the Abbey ruins, the narrow, rambling streets, and pantiled roofs will be very familiar to UK TV viewers of ITV’s “Heart Beat” series.
Historically the town is well known as the setting for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and as the place where Captain James Cook learned to become a mariner before he went on to become Britain’s foremost navigator, explorer and cartographer. A replica of his most famous ship, the Endeavour, regularly visits the harbour on its round the world voyages.
Whitby has long been a popular holiday destination for UK visitors but now attracts travellers from throughout the world. It is an ideal base for those who wish to explore Yorkshire’s coastline, the rugged North Yorkshire Moors or ancient cities and towns such as York and Helmsley. Walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, fishing enthusiasts and those who have a love of the great outdoors would be hard put to find a better location for a holiday. The town has a fine selection of real ale pubs, bars, and restaurants serving a wealth of cuisines, as well as a whole host of take-aways selling fresh Whitby fish and chips.
